Game + manual: the cartridge and its manual, no box. The cartridge label is clean, and the manual shows light wear from handling. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Mickey Mouse dozes off over a storybook and wakes up somewhere else entirely: a kingdom of floating clouds, haunted forests and sleepy villages, all of it falling into misery since the mysterious Phantom stole the magic crystal that kept the land at peace. Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse is the follow-up to Sega's 8-bit Castle of Illusion, and many fans of Sega's handheld rank it among the finest platformers the Game Gear ever had.

What makes it special is the way it grows. Mickey starts out with his trusty bounce and the ability to pick up and throw blocks, but as the journey goes on he earns new powers, such as shrinking down to slip through tiny passages and climbing ropes, and those abilities open up routes that were sealed off before. A map ties the stages together, with branching paths and places worth revisiting, so the game feels like an expedition rather than a straight line of levels. Each area ends with a boss, and the challenge builds steadily toward the final confrontation with the Phantom.

The presentation is just as strong. The sprite work is detailed and expressive, Mickey animates with real personality, and the music has the light, storybook quality the setting deserves. Sega's 8-bit team built it as its own game rather than a port, and it shows in the careful level design and the sense of discovery tucked into every stage.

It sits in the middle of the Illusion series on Sega's 8-bit systems, between Castle of Illusion and Legend of Illusion, and it is the entry that took the first game's object-carrying platforming and wrapped it in a bigger, more adventurous world. For a Game Gear shelf, it is the Mickey game to play first.
