Item Description

Meet Kwirk, a chilled-out tomato in shades on a mission to rescue his girlfriend Tammy from a maze of underground rooms. In Japan the game was called Puzzle Boy and starred a different hero, but when Acclaim brought it to North America in 1990, the star got a makeover, and one of the Game Boy's smartest early puzzlers got a personality to match.

Each room is a compact grid-based brain teaser: reach the staircase on the far side by pushing blocks, dropping them into holes to make bridges, and rotating turnstiles. The turnstiles are the stroke of genius. They swing as you push through them, blocking or opening paths depending on where you enter, and figuring out the right order of moves can take several minutes of head-scratching before the solution suddenly clicks. There is no combat and no reflex test on the story floors, just clean, satisfying spatial logic.

Kwirk offers a surprising amount of variety for an early cartridge. Going Up? is the story mode, a floor-by-floor climb toward Tammy across three skill levels, with Kwirk's vegetable friends along for the ride. Heading Out? turns the rooms into a race against the clock, and Vs. Mode lets two players go head to head over the Game Link Cable. You can even switch between a diagonal view, with shadows that give the blocks a crude 3D look, and a flat bird's-eye view.

It was one of the first games Atlus published under its own name, years before that company became known for Persona and Shin Megami Tensei, and the Puzzle Boy series continued in Japan afterward. For puzzle fans, Kwirk is a reminder that the Game Boy's early library was about much more than Tetris.

About the game

Kwirk has three game modes: Going Up?, Heading Out?, and Vs. Mode, each one with its own set of rules. The object is to get from one end of the room to the staircase on the other by rotating turnstiles, moving blocks, and filling holes with blocks. Kwirk has three skill levels: Level 1 - Easy, Level 2 - Average and Level 3 - Hard. After, one of two viewpoints may be selected: Diagonal or Bird's Eye. In Diagonal view, characters and blocks have shadows and appear in crude 3D, whereas in Bird's Eye view everything is 2D, viewed from the top down. The three skill levels and two viewpoints are featured in all three game modes.
