Item Description

Long before Demon's Souls taught a new generation to fear every corner, FromSoftware was making King's Field. The Ancient City, released in Japan as King's Field IV, is the last of the series on home consoles and the most atmospheric of the lot: a slow, lonely, first-person descent into a ruined underground civilization where nothing is explained and almost everything wants you dead.

You play Prince Devian of Azalin, sent on a grim errand. The cursed Idol of Sorrow was taken from the ruined Holy Land, now called the Land of Disaster, and given to the king of Heladin, and its presence has poisoned the kingdom ever since. Devian's task is to carry it back to where it came from, which means venturing into the ancient city spread through the Land of Disaster's caverns. The story comes in fragments, from cryptic notes, strange survivors and the architecture itself, and piecing it together is part of the pull.

The play is deliberate in a way modern action games rarely are. You move and fight in real time from a first-person view, and every swing drains a stamina gauge, so rushing an enemy is a quick way to die. Magic has to be managed carefully, healing is precious, and the world is one continuous labyrinth of caves, ruins and flooded passages, where finding a door or shortcut back to a safe spot is a real victory. The gloomy lighting and sparse, unsettling sound design make simply walking forward feel tense.

It is not for everyone. Reviews were mixed, and its pace and lack of hand-holding put off plenty of players when it reached North America in 2002. But those same qualities are exactly why it has gained a cult following since, as players trace the roots of the Souls series back through FromSoftware's history. For anyone curious about where that design philosophy began, The Ancient City is the PS2's most direct window into it.
