Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory answers by turning more than 140 songs from the series into playable stages, from the world themes and battle music Yoko Shimomura and her collaborators wrote over nearly two decades to the vocal tracks fans have played on repeat. Square Enix co-developed it with indieszero, the studio behind the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy rhythm games, and that pedigree shows in how cleanly every beat lines up with the action.

Sora, Donald and Goofy run along a track while Heartless arrive in time with the song. You strike enemies on the beat, jump over hazards and glide through strings of notes, so it feels like a Kingdom Hearts battle choreographed to a metronome. Stages come in three flavors: Field Battles set in familiar worlds, Memory Dives that play out over scenes from the series like a music video, and Boss Battles against famous foes. Play styles run from Basic to One Button, where your party handles the attacking, up to Performer, which layers on extra inputs, across Beginner, Standard and Proud difficulties.

The World Tour campaign strings it together, flying the Gummi Ship from world to world to unlock new songs and characters, while Kairi narrates a journey back through her memories that continues her story from the end of Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind. It is the series' lightest entry in tone, but that thread gives it a real place in the larger story. Beyond the campaign, Double Play hands a second player a controller for local co-op, COM Versus pits you against the computer, and the game was built with an online versus mode where rivals throw tricks to disrupt each other.

Reviews were warm rather than ecstatic, with the praise centered on the track list and the nostalgia, which is exactly the point. Melody of Memory is a playable greatest-hits album for a series whose soundtrack is half its identity, a chance to relive two decades of worlds, rivals and final battles through the music that defined them.
