Item Description

Sora, Donald and Goofy are turned into toys themselves, climb into a hulking Gigas mech and battle through a Galaxy Toys superstore while Woody and Buzz Lightyear fight at their side. Moments like that are what Kingdom Hearts III was built for. After more than a decade of spin-offs and handheld chapters following Kingdom Hearts II, Square Enix brought the numbered series to PlayStation 4 with the conclusion of the Xehanort saga, as Sora searches for the seven guardians of light needed to stop Master Xehanort from igniting a second Keyblade War.

The combat is the fastest and flashiest the series had seen on a home console. Keyblades now Formchange mid-combo, transforming into entirely new weapons with their own finishers. Attraction Flow summons Disney park rides as attacks, so a fight might end with Sora spinning enemies away on the teacups or riding a runaway mine-train coaster straight through a crowd of Heartless. Athletic Flow lets him sprint up walls and vault across rooftops, Link summons call in friends like Ariel and Simba for screen-filling assists, and in most worlds Donald and Goofy are joined by local heroes as extra party members.

The worlds are the most lavish the series has built: Rapunzel's Kingdom of Corona, Monstropolis with Sulley and Mike, the snowy peaks of Arendelle, the open seas of the Caribbean with ship-to-ship battles, and Big Hero 6's San Fransokyo, a sprawling city you can run straight up the side of. Between them the Gummi Ship finally flies free through open space, and side activities give the game real texture, from Remy's cooking minigames at the Little Chef's Bistro to Classic Kingdom, a set of handheld-style games based on early Mickey cartoons, to the Lucky Emblems hidden for Sora's Gummiphone camera to find.

What makes Kingdom Hearts III land is how much it pays off. Threads planted in the very first game, in Birth by Sleep and in Dream Drop Distance finally converge at the Keyblade Graveyard, and the final stretch is a parade of reunions, rival duels and long-awaited answers. Yoko Shimomura's score swells to match, and Hikaru Utada returned once more with "Face My Fears" and "Don't Think Twice." If you have been following Sora since the PlayStation 2, this is the chapter the whole saga was building toward.

About the game

Kingdom Hearts III is the third main installment in the Kingdom Hearts series developed and published by Square Enix. It was initially released January 2019 for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. An expansion, Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind was released in January 2020. The story takes place after the events of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. It features an older Sora as the main protagonist, who sets forth on a new adventure to search for seven guardians of light in an attempt to stop Xehanort from bringing about a second Keyblade War. Sora is joined by Donald Duck, Goofy, Mickey Mouse, Riku, Kairi, and others. Along the way, Sora travels to many worlds from Disney and Pixar intellectual properties, and cross paths with the real Organization XIII. Kingdom Hearts III features hack and slash combat reminiscent of Kingdom Hearts II, with elements from later handheld entries, allowing the player to control Sora in a party with Donald, Goofy, and up to two other Disney characters from the various worlds he visits. A major addition compared is the Formchange mechanic, which allows his currently equipped Keyblade to grant him special abilities and change shape.
