Item Description

A boy with a giant key, Donald Duck and Goofy walk into Agrabah. On paper it sounds like a joke, and when Square and Disney announced Kingdom Hearts plenty of players treated it as one. Then the game arrived in 2002 and became one of the defining action RPGs of the PlayStation 2, a crossover so sincere and so carefully built that it launched a series still going more than two decades later.

You play Sora, swept away from the sunny Destiny Islands when darkness swallows his home and scatters his friends Riku and Kairi. In Traverse Town he meets Donald and Goofy, sent by a missing King Mickey to find the wielder of the Keyblade, and the trio sets off across worlds drawn from Disney's animated classics: Wonderland, Tarzan's Deep Jungle, Agrabah, the belly of Monstro, Ariel's undersea Atlantica, Halloween Town, Neverland and the Olympus Coliseum, where Hercules and Phil run the tournaments. Final Fantasy faces such as Leon, Yuffie, Aerith and Cloud turn up along the way, and watching the two universes collide is half the delight.

Combat is fast, real-time Keyblade action layered over a proper RPG. You level up, equip abilities, chain combos, cast Fire, Blizzard and Thunder, and summon allies like Simba and Genie. The Heartless come in dozens of forms, and boss fights from the towering Darkside to Ursula and Captain Hook reward learning patterns rather than mashing. Between worlds you build and pilot the Gummi Ship, and optional challenges stretch the game well past the credits. The North American release added content the original Japanese version lacked, including a secret battle with Sephiroth in the Coliseum that became a rite of passage for a generation of players.

The polish shows everywhere. Tetsuya Nomura's character designs, Yoko Shimomura's sweeping score and Hikaru Utada's theme song, Simple and Clean in English and Hikari in Japanese, give the game an emotional pull that caught a lot of players off guard, and the English cast, led by Haley Joel Osment as Sora, sells its earnest heart without a hint of irony. This is the first chapter of a long story about friendship and light against darkness, and the place to meet Sora, Riku and Kairi exactly as the series introduced them, on the console where it all started.
