Item Description

Kinect Joy Ride started life as Joyride, announced at E3 2009 as a free Xbox Live Arcade game, and BigPark reworked it into one of the launch titles for the Kinect sensor in 2010. The result is an arcade kart racer starring Xbox avatars and designed entirely around motion controls: no wheel, no pad, just your arms held out around an invisible steering wheel.

The control scheme is the whole charm. Turn your hands to steer, push your hips forward to drift through corners, and pull the imaginary wheel toward your chest before thrusting it forward to fire a turbo boost. Launch off a jump and you can twist and spin your body to pull off mid-air tricks for extra points. Five game modes, including races, battles and stunt and trick events, spread across three themed worlds, and earning fans unlocks new tracks and modes as you go, with two players able to race side by side at home.

Critics at the time found the steering loose and preferred other launch titles, so this is a lighthearted family racer rather than a precision driving game. Its real interest today is historical: it captures the experimental first wave of Kinect software, when Microsoft was showing what controller-free play could look like, and it carries the avatar-era look of the Xbox 360 dashboard. For collectors of the console's Kinect launch lineup, it is a vivid record of that moment.
