When the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013, Killzone: Shadow Fall was the game Sony put front and center to show what its new console could do, and Guerrilla Games used the moment to take the series somewhere unexpected. Thirty years after Killzone 3, the war between the Vektans and the Helghast has frozen into a cold one. Helghast refugees have been resettled on Vekta itself, and a massive wall now divides Vekta City, with gleaming towers on one side and the grim Helghast sector on the other.

You play Lucas Kellan, a Shadow Marshal whose story begins with a childhood prologue as the wall goes up, and whose missions take him from Vektan forests to covert operations across the border. The levels are noticeably more open than in earlier Killzones, offering several routes to an objective and room for stealth as well as head-on firefights. Kellan's partner is the OWL, a drone you direct with swipes on the DualShock 4 touchpad: send it to attack, raise a protective shield, stun enemies or fire a zip-line across a gap, and the best encounters let you combine all of it.

It was also built to impress. Shadow Fall's glass, light and reflections were a first look at a new console generation, and Guerrilla's sleek, brutal Helghast designs have rarely looked better. The story, with Kellan's mentor Thomas Sinclair and the Helghast agent Echo, leans into espionage and moral gray areas rather than straight-ahead war. Online, the game was designed around 24-player battles and the series' Warzone mode, where objectives shift mid-match, with tools for players to create Warzones under their own rules.

Reviews were split, praising the visuals more than the story, and it turned out to be the final Killzone: Guerrilla moved on to Horizon Zero Dawn, which makes Shadow Fall the last chapter of the Helghast saga to date. As a PS4 launch title and the closing entry in a long-running PlayStation shooter series, it is a fascinating snapshot of 2013 and still a gorgeous campaign to play on the hardware it was made to show off.

Killzone Shadow Fall is the sixth game of the Killzone series. Gameplay in Shadow Fall is fairly similar to previous installments, though now with more improvements. The game is much more open-ended allowing for multiple ways to reach your target and complete objectives. The player is accompanied by a companion drone called the OWL which can help you in many different ways including deploying a zip-line or stunning the enemy. Using futuristic weapons and gear allows for new stealth gameplay. The online multiplayer mode allows for up to 24-players to battle at once on any of the games default 10 maps. The level system is now challenge-based where completing any of the games many challenges will upgrade your rank. Warzone returns as an online game mode along with Team Deathmatch and Beacon Retrieval (Capture the Flag). A new feature allows for the user to create Warzones with their own specific rules and share them with the community to download and play.
