The wave counter ticks down, the doors give way and the Zeds pour in. Killing Floor has always lived in that moment, and Killing Floor III, Tripwire Interactive's 2025 return to the series, keeps the formula intact while pushing the story into 2091. The megacorporation Horzine has built the perfect army out of bioengineered monstrosities, and only the rebel group Nightfall stands in the way.
Squads of up to six head out from Nightfall's Stronghold hub and hold the line through escalating waves, with enemy numbers scaling to the size of the team, before facing a boss at the end. Six specialists each bring their own weapons and special attacks; the Ninja, for instance, fights with a pair of swords and a grappling hook. Zed Time, the series' signature slow-motion moment, returns too: rack up kills and the action briefly crawls, highlighting nearby enemies so you can line up the perfect shot.
Progression runs on two tracks. Completing matches unlocks new weapon mods to customize your arsenal and new skills for your specialists, so each run gives you a few more options for the next one. The game also supports solo play for those who want to practice before joining a squad.
The series began as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004 and grew into one of the longest-running co-op horde shooters around, with Killing Floor 2 drawing a loyal audience for years. The third entry had a rocky road, with a delay following a closed beta in early 2025 and mixed reviews at launch, though critics singled out the shooting itself for praise. It was built around co-op and is at its best with a group that likes the chaos of a horde shooter.
