Item Description
Karn, the Great Creator does two jobs at once, and the other side of the table hates both of them. His static ability means activated abilities of artifacts your opponents control simply cannot be activated. Mana rocks go quiet, Treasure and Clue tokens become useless, equipment can no longer be equipped. For four mana and a starting loyalty of 5, that is a lot of disruption sitting on the battlefield before he even uses a loyalty ability.
Then he starts building. His +1 turns up to one noncreature artifact into an artifact creature with power and toughness equal to its mana value until your next turn, giving you an attacker or blocker from a big relic, or making an opponent's artifact vulnerable to creature removal. His −2 puts an artifact card you own from outside the game, or a face-up artifact you own in exile, into your hand. In formats with a sideboard that becomes a toolbox, and the classic pairing is Mycosynth Lattice: once every permanent is an artifact, Karn's static shuts off opponents' lands too. In Commander, the −2 is a way to recover artifacts that were exiled.
This is the War of the Spark printing, collector number 1, illustrated by Wisnu Tan, in non-foil. War of the Spark was the 2019 set that put a planeswalker in every booster and brought the Nicol Bolas saga to its climax, and Karn opens its collector numbering.
