Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Plenty of NES heroes fight with swords or blasters. The hero of Kabuki: Quantum Fighter fights with his hair. That single gloriously strange idea, a kabuki warrior whipping enemies with his long mane, is what gets people to pick this game up, and the tight, demanding action underneath is what keeps them playing.

The premise is pure early-nineties cyberpunk. In 2056 a virus has infected Earth's main defense computer, and Colonel Scott O'Connor has his mind converted into computer code so he can fight it from the inside. Once inside the system, his digital body takes the form of his great-great-grandfather, a kabuki actor. Alongside the hair attack he picks up special weapon chips, the Energy Gun, Fusion Gun, Quantum Bombs and a remote-controlled Bolo, and each level ends with a one-room showdown against a boss. The deeper O'Connor goes, the clearer it becomes that the virus did not come from Earth, and that it means to turn the lost Hyperion probe against humanity.

Human Entertainment developed it, and in Japan it was released in December 1990 as Jigoku Gokurakumaru, a tie-in to the film Zipang with a different hero and story. HAL Laboratory published the reworked version in North America in early 1991, stripping out the film references in favor of the O'Connor storyline. Critics were impressed: all four Electronic Gaming Monthly reviewers scored it 9 out of 10, and Computer and Video Games singled out its detailed graphics.

It is a short, sharp, strikingly designed action platformer with a premise nobody else would have dared, the kind of cartridge that makes players grin the first time the hair attack connects, and a reminder of how much glorious weirdness the NES could still hold in its later years.
