Item Description

Seven heroes on the opening roster, a villain list that runs from Queen Bee to Darkseid, and a story written by someone who knew exactly how these characters talk to each other: Justice League Heroes was built to make the League feel like a team rather than a lineup of solo acts. Snowblind Studios, the developer behind Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath, brought its top-down action engine to the DC Universe in 2006, and the script came from Dwayne McDuffie, a comics veteran and one of the key writers behind the Justice League Unlimited animated series. The result is a brawler with real comic-book instincts.

Every mission drops two heroes into the fight, and in single player you can swap between them at any moment, pairing Batman's close-quarters fighting with Superman's raw power, or sending The Flash in fast while Martian Manhunter holds the line. Hand the second controller to a friend and each of you takes a hero for couch co-op, which is where the game really comes alive. Experience earned in battle feeds upgradeable powers, and collectible boosts let you fine-tune each hero's strengths, so the Green Lantern who finishes the campaign hits a lot harder than the one who started it.

The starting lineup covers Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, John Stewart's Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and Zatanna, and the unlockables reach deep into League history: Aquaman, Black Canary, Green Arrow, Hawkgirl, Huntress, and both Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner wearing the ring. Unlockable costumes recreate classic and alternate looks. The plot opens with Brainiac's robots ambushing Superman and Batman at S.T.A.R. Labs and spirals outward from there, freeing Gorilla Grodd, turning Metropolis over to Queen Bee's drones, sending Doomsday after the Watchtower and building to a final confrontation with Darkseid himself.

It landed the same October as Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and that rivalry is part of its charm today: this was DC's answer, smaller in scale but tightly focused on the League's core members and their villains. Easy, Medium and Hard are open from the start, with Elite and Superhero difficulties waiting for players who want to push a favorite pairing further. On the PlayStation 2 it makes a sharp pick for a two-player night, and a rare chance to play a Justice League adventure scripted by one of the people who defined the team's modern animated voice.

About the game

Justice League Heroes is a console video game for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation Portable systems. It is based on DC Comics' premier superhero team, the Justice League of America. It was developed by Snowblind Studios and published and distributed by Warner Bros. Games for all systems except Xbox which was distributed by Eidos Interactive in conjunction with DC Comics. It is based on the long-running comic book series, (as opposed to other recent Justice League games which are adaptations of other media besides the source material) and was written by veteran comic book and Justice League of America writer Dwayne McDuffie. It uses the Dark Alliance Engine. Two handheld Justice League Heroes games were released at the same time for the GBA and Nintendo DS systems. The Nintendo DS game shares a similar visual style and gameplay mechanics to the console version, but serves as a prequel to its story. This version was developed by Sensory Sweep Studios. The GBA version is titled Justice League Heroes: The Flash and focuses primarily on The Flash. The game featured 2D sidescrolling action gameplay and a sidestory to the console game's plot.
