Item Description
Few open-world games of 2006 were as happy to let you do something ridiculous as Just Cause. Rico Rodriguez can latch his grappling hook onto a moving car, parasail behind a speedboat, stand on the roof of a speeding vehicle and leap across to another, or bail out of a plane and pop his parachute with the island spread out below him. Avalanche Studios built its first game around that sense of freedom, and the stunts are the reason people still talk about it.
The playground is San Esperito, a fictional Caribbean island nation, with an explorable area of more than 1,024 square kilometers of jungle, beaches, mountains and towns. Rico is an agent of the Agency, sent by his mentor Tom Sheldon and working alongside fellow agent Maria Kane to topple the dictator President Salvador Mendoza. Mendoza rules with the Montano drug cartel and the Black Hand mercenaries behind him, while a guerrilla movement and the rival Rioja cartel push back, and earning their trust is how the revolution spreads.
There are 21 story missions, but the real volume is in the more than 300 side missions, from liberating villages to seizing cartel hideouts, each turning a little more of the map against Mendoza. Cars, boats, motorcycles, aircraft and helicopters are all there for the taking, and the joy of the game is improvising with them: stealing a helicopter to cross a mountain range, or towing yourself behind a jeep to reach a target.
Reviews were mixed to positive, with critics praising the scale while noting rough edges, and it spent three weeks at the top of the UK Xbox 360 sales chart. More importantly, it planted the DNA of a whole series: the grapple, the parachute and the physics-driven chaos that Just Cause 2, 3 and 4 refined. On Xbox 360, this is the place to see where Rico's career began, with its huge island and a sense of mayhem that was ahead of its time.
