Item Description

The roar of the Tyrannosaurus in the Sega CD's Jurassic Park began as angry alligators, recorded by sound designer Brian Coburn in Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp, and that level of obsession runs through the whole game. Sega of America paid for the film rights early, built several prototypes before settling on a first-person design, and produced the first Sega CD game developed entirely in the U.S. It is a completely different animal from the Genesis and Super Nintendo cartridges.

The story picks up after the film. A team of scientists is sent to Isla Nublar to collect dinosaur eggs, their helicopter goes down, and a video message from computer expert Emily Shimura reveals that the rival Biosyn Corporation planted the bomb. As the lone survivor, you have twelve real-time hours to find eggs from seven dinosaur species and place them in the incubator at the visitor center before Biosyn's agents close in.

Exploration plays out in a panoramic, point-and-click first-person view, with backgrounds built from real footage shot in Georgia and an Alabama swamp. Your tools are a stun gun, tranquilizer darts and gas grenades, none of them lethal, so each dinosaur encounter plays more like a puzzle in disguise than a firefight, with split-second timing deciding the outcome. Night vision goggles and first-aid kits help you survive, and paleontologist Robert T. Bakker appears on video at Dinosaur Field Kiosks near the paddocks, offering hints and real science. Bakker also advised the developers on how the dinosaurs should move and behave, and Spencer Nilsen's soundtrack and QSound audio keep the jungle tense.

Reviews were mixed, praising the sound and video while finding its pace leisurely, but the game's ambition is exactly what makes it worth owning today. Released in the U.S. in early 1994 and only on the Sega CD, it is the Jurassic Park game that tried to be an expedition rather than a run-and-gun, and a fascinating time capsule from the year dinosaurs ruled pop culture.
