Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

The fences are down, the dinosaurs are loose, and somebody has to round them up. Sega's 1993 Jurassic Park for the Game Gear takes the summer's biggest movie and turns it into a compact action game with a clear, clever structure: five stages, each devoted to recapturing one escaped species, and each with its own mix of driving, shooting and platforming.

Every stage opens behind the wheel. The jeep rolls through a side-scrolling stretch of the park while dinosaurs charge the vehicle, and you fend them off with a crosshair, a shooting-gallery section that gives the game an arcade punch right from the start. Survive the drive and the hunt continues, ending in a boss battle against an especially powerful dinosaur. That variety is the big surprise. Many film tie-ins of the era were single-idea platformers, but this one changes pace constantly, and the dinosaur encounters capture some of the movie's sense of scale on a tiny screen.

Sega developed its own versions of Jurassic Park for the Genesis, the Sega CD and its 8-bit systems, and the Game Gear game shares its design with the Master System version rather than the 16-bit release. It is a different game from the Genesis one, with its own stage design and a structure built around the driving-into-hunt rhythm.

The summer of 1993 put Jurassic Park on everything from lunchboxes to toy aisles, and most of the games that rode that wave have been forgotten. This one holds up better than most of its first-wave peers, with real variety, a boss waiting at the end of every stage and a structure that keeps the dinosaur chaos coming, which makes it a fun way to relive the film on original handheld hardware.

About the game

One of many games based on the 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, the version for Sega's 8-bit systems combines side-scrolling shooting action and platforming levels. In each of the five stages of the game, one escaped dinosaur species must be recaptured. Each level begins with a side-scrolling driving section. Dinosaurs attack the car and must be fended off by firing at them with a crosshair. If the player survives long enough, a boss battle against an especially powerful dinosaur follows.
