Item Description

Jungle Hunt asks you to be four different kinds of hero in a single run. One minute you are swinging rope to rope above the jungle floor, the next you are diving into a crocodile-filled river with your air running out, then sprinting uphill under a hail of bouncing boulders, and finally leaping past spear-waving cannibals to pull Penelope away from the cooking pot. In 1983 that much variety on one cartridge was rare, and it is still what makes the game such a pleasure to pick up.

Taito's arcade original began life as Jungle King, starring a vine-swinging hero who looked an awful lot like Tarzan, until the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate objected. Taito swapped in a pith-helmeted explorer and renamed the game, and Atari's home versions named the hero Sir Dudley, with the lovely Penelope as his captive sweetheart. The Atari 5200 conversion, programmed in-house by Alan Merrell with graphics by Jerome Domurat, is regarded as one of the strongest home versions and a big step up from the 2600 release.

Each stage plays like its own little game. Deadly Jungle is all about rhythm, and later loops add monkeys that can knock you off the ropes. Reptile River lets you stab crocodiles while their jaws are shut, but the Mysterious Murk can trap you and haul you to the surface while you watch the air meter. Boulder Field is about reading each rock's bounce and deciding in a split second whether to jump or duck, and on the 5200 the hill actually climbs as you run. Cannibal Camp is the final test of timing, and once Penelope is safe the whole circuit starts over, faster and meaner.

That loop is the appeal: short, varied stages that make “one more try” an easy promise to break. Jungle Hunt shows the 5200 doing exactly what Atari pitched it to do, bringing a colorful, ambitious arcade game into the living room with all four of its stages and its personality intact.

About the game

Jungle Hunt offers four unique adventure experiences, which repeat with greater difficulty once all four have been survived. If you don't survive these adventures, you will not only lose your own life but that of the lovely Penelope, who has been captured by cannibals! The first part challenges your Tarzan skills - can you swing on the vines without plummeting to your doom? The second part pits you against a whole bunch of nasty crocodiles in a mighty river. Fortunately, you have a knife to fight back with. Don't forget to go up for air! In the third part, you face a battle against oncoming boulders of varying sizes and physics. Once you've cleared all these treacherous hazards, you still must confront the dreaded cannibal, who is armed with a wicked spear. Can you get past him and save the lovely Penelope?
