Item Description

Mowgli has been raised by wolves, and now the jungle itself is the obstacle course. The Jungle Book on the Game Gear turns Disney's 1967 animated film into a swinging, climbing, banana-throwing platformer, and it captures the film's mix of lazy charm and real danger in a way that suits Sega's handheld beautifully.

The adventure is all about movement. Mowgli leaps between branches, grabs vines and swings across gaps, and climbs his way up through dense jungle, with monkeys, snakes and other wildlife in the way. His main weapon is a supply of bananas to throw, and part of the fun is learning when to fight and when to keep moving, especially on stages built around tricky jumps. The cast comes straight from the film, from Baloo and Bagheera to Kaa and King Louie, with Shere Khan as the threat hanging over the whole journey.

This 8-bit adaptation, developed by Syrox Developments, is its own take on the material rather than a scaled-down copy of the 16-bit games. The main elements of the Genesis and Super Nintendo versions are there, but the level design differs and some items are missing, so even players who know those versions well will find unfamiliar stages here. The bright jungle colors look lovely on the backlit screen, and the tunes carry that easygoing Disney swing.

It belongs to a golden stretch of Disney licenses on Sega hardware, alongside games like Aladdin and The Lion King, when the studio's films reliably became colorful, carefully made platformers. If you grew up singing along with Baloo, this is a cheerful way to revisit the jungle on original hardware.
