Item Description

A priest tells you there is only one way to save your girlfriend Sarah from the demon that has possessed her: leave your own body behind and walk into her mind. Juggernaut, from Japanese developer Will, takes that unsettling idea and turns it into a first-person puzzle adventure where her psyche takes the shape of a vast mansion, each door opening onto a different world.

The structure has a real sense of strangeness. From the mansion you travel into four microcosms set on a prison island, in a jungle, in a forest and in cyberspace, collecting items, examining every corner and working through puzzles that slowly reveal what happened to Sarah. Body converters let you switch between a child's and an adult's body to reach areas only one form can access, and occasional timed sequences force you to dodge danger or use a weapon under pressure. The pace is deliberate and cerebral, much closer to Myst than to the action-heavy horror of its era.

Juggernaut was released in Japan in 1998 and brought to North America by Jaleco in 1999. Reviews were mixed, though Next Generation judged it a solid entry in the point-and-click genre, and that divided reception is part of its appeal today. It is an odd, atmospheric game that rewards patient players who enjoy piecing together a mystery.

For collectors exploring the PlayStation's stranger corners, Juggernaut is a memorable find: a demonic-possession puzzle adventure that never quite fit any box, built around a love story told from inside someone else's mind.
