Item Description

Somewhere in a sea of glittering sand, a small robed figure looks up at a mountain split by a shaft of light, and without a single word of instruction you know where to go. Journey turned that wordless pull into one of the most moving experiences of the PlayStation 3 era, and the Collector's Edition was thatgamecompany's first retail disc, pairing it with the studio's two earlier PSN games, flOw and Flower.

Journey itself is brief and unforgettable. You surf down dunes, gather glowing symbols that lengthen a magical scarf, and use that scarf to float across gaps as you travel through the ruins of a vanished civilization. There is nothing to fight, and your only voice is a single musical chime. The game was designed around chance meetings with anonymous travelers online, strangers you can help or follow but never talk to, and that quiet companionship is what players remember most. Austin Wintory's score swells and recedes with every step and earned a Grammy nomination, the first for a video game score in the visual media soundtrack category, while Journey itself took Game of the Year at both the D.I.C.E. Awards and the Game Developers Choice Awards.

The two companion games show where that philosophy came from. flOw casts you as a tiny aquatic organism drifting ever deeper into the ocean, eating smaller creatures and evolving as you go, all steered by tilting the controller. Flower hands you the wind itself, sweeping petals across fields and hillsides and breathing life back into faded landscapes with the same gentle motion controls. Played in order, the three form a neat arc of a studio learning to make players feel something with almost no words at all. The disc also gathers behind-the-scenes material, including a making-of documentary about Journey, creator commentary playthroughs and three mini-games from the studio.

Together they make a lovely counterpoint to the shooters and open-world epics that dominated the PS3, and a single disc that holds the studio's whole early body of work. Journey in particular is the kind of game people press into a friend's hands: a couple of hours long and impossible to shake afterward.
