Ora ora ora: when Jotaro Kujo's Star Platinum unloads a barrage of fists, Capcom's fighter captures exactly why Hirohiko Araki's manga became such a phenomenon. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure brings the Stardust Crusaders arc to the PlayStation, with Jotaro, his grandfather Joseph and their allies fighting their way from Japan to Egypt to confront DIO.

The heart of the fighting system is the Stand. Most characters can summon their spirit partner at the press of a button, switching to a completely different set of moves and specials, and much of the strategy lies in knowing when to bring your Stand out and when to put it away. It gives familiar Capcom fighting-game fundamentals a strange, distinctive twist, and the roster, featuring Kakyoin, Avdol, Polnareff, Iggy the dog, Hol Horse and DIO himself, is as eccentric as you would expect from the series. Some characters fight in ways that barely resemble a traditional brawler at all.

This PlayStation version is based on the arcade game JoJo's Venture but adds the extra characters from the revised arcade release, and it introduces a Super Story Mode built for this console that follows the full Stardust Crusaders storyline. For fans, that mode is a big draw, turning the fighter into a retelling of the whole journey rather than just a string of matches. The animation of Capcom's sprites is wonderfully expressive, capturing Araki's dramatic poses and over-the-top facial expressions with real flair.

It reached North America years before the anime adaptation made JoJo a household name in the West, which gives it a special place in the franchise's history. This is Capcom's take on Stardust Crusaders exactly as PlayStation owners first played it, complete with the story mode the arcade never had.

About the game

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is the console version of 1998 Arcade game of the same title. Two console versions were produced. The 1999 PlayStation version is based on JoJo's Venture, but features the additional characters from the second version of the arcade game and an exclusive "Super Story Mode", which covers the entire Stardust Crusaders story arc. The Dreamcast version, also released in 1999, features both the original and revised versions of the arcade game in their original forms.
