Item Description

Jackie Chan never made a film where he simply stood and fought, and Jackie Chan Stuntmaster carries that same restless energy into a PlayStation beat-'em-up. Radical Entertainment built the game with Jackie consulting along the way, motion-captured his movements for the in-game character and had him voice himself, so the flips, kicks and scrambles you pull off are rooted in the real thing.

The setup is pure action-comedy: Jackie's grandfather has been kidnapped, and the only way to get him back is to fight across New York City. The game stretches over fifteen fully 3D levels, mixing brawls with gangs of thugs and platforming sections full of environmental obstacles, and the challenge often comes from chaining moves together to get past them. Hidden golden dragons are worth chasing, since collecting them unlocks a video of Jackie talking about the game along with behind-the-scenes motion-capture footage.

Critics at the time landed in the middle, liking the star power and the animation more than the fairly traditional brawling, and that is a fair way to see it today. Stuntmaster is not trying to reinvent its genre. It is a lighthearted, quick-moving romp that feels like a Jackie Chan movie, with a hero who wins by being nimble and a little goofy rather than by being invincible.

Published in North America by Midway in 2000, it is a fun piece of late PlayStation history and one of the few games where Jackie himself lent both his voice and his moves. Martial-arts movie lovers will get a kick out of hearing him in action and seeing his signature physical comedy translated into polygons.
