Item Description

Most decks lose when they run out of cards. Jace, Wielder of Mysteries flips that rule on its head: if you would draw from an empty library, you win the game instead. It is the old Laboratory Maniac trick bolted onto a planeswalker, and it gives self-mill decks a win condition that sits on the battlefield rather than in a fragile creature.

For four mana (one generic plus triple blue) he arrives with 4 loyalty. The +1 makes a target player mill two cards and then draws you one, so you can aim it at yourself to race through your own deck or at an opponent to chip at theirs. The −8 draws seven cards and then wins outright if your library is empty, a dramatic finish if you have been milling yourself all along. In Commander, he is the kind of card that turns a pile of self-mill and card-draw effects into a real game plan.

This is the War of the Spark printing, collector number 54, illustrated by Anna Steinbauer, in non-foil. War of the Spark put a planeswalker in every booster and filled the set with 36 of them, and this Jace gave blue mages a whole new way to win.
