Item Description

Imagine a race where the finish line is straight up. Iggy's Reckin' Balls, published by Acclaim in 1998 and developed by Iguana Entertainment, swaps the racetrack for towering vertical obstacle courses and its drivers for grinning, bouncing balls armed with grappling hooks. It is one of the oddest ideas on the Nintendo 64, and it works far better than it has any right to.

The grappling hook is everything. Fire it at the next ledge and you haul yourself upward, but you can also hook a rival and drag them back down, which turns every climb into a scrappy tug-of-war. Designer Jools Watsham took inspiration for the hook from Bionic Commando, and you can feel that swinging, momentum-driven heritage in every leap. Reach the top first and you are dropped back to the bottom to climb it again, and power-ups scattered along the course hand out temporary abilities that can swing a race in the final stretch.

There is a surprising amount packed in: ten worlds of ten towers each for a hundred courses, plus Arcade, Mix-up, Time Trial and Battle modes. Eight characters are available from the start with nine more hidden, and Iggy himself is a nod to Iguana's own mascot. With up to four players in split-screen, it becomes a shouting match of hooks, shoves and last-second steals.

Critics were split at launch, but the game found a cult following among players who loved its weirdness, and it reached a new audience through Nintendo Switch Online in 2024. The original cartridge is where that following began, and it is a perfect pick for a four-player night when everyone has already worn out the usual racers.
