What happens when The Legend of Zelda meets the thousand-enemy battlefields of Dynasty Warriors? Hyrule Warriors answers with Link spinning through hundreds of Bokoblins at once, and the result is far more fun than a spin-off has any right to be. Developed by Koei Tecmo's Omega Force with Team Ninja and released on the Wii U in 2014, it is a loving, slightly unhinged tribute to the series' history.
The story follows Cia, a sorceress charged with watching over the balance of time, until her obsession with the hero breaks that balance and tears open portals to different eras. That lets the game mix locations and characters from Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, and the roster pulls from all of them: Link, Zelda, Impa, Sheik, Midna, Fi, Darunia, Ruto, Agitha and Ghirahim fight alongside original characters like Lana, Cia's good-hearted counterpart.
The battles mix crowd-clearing combos with real strategy. You capture keeps, protect allies and react to shifting objectives across the map, while giant bosses such as King Dodongo, Gohma, Manhandla and Argorok can only be brought down by exposing their weak points with classic Zelda items like bombs and the bow. Heart pieces, Gold Skulltulas and new weapons are hidden throughout, and Adventure Mode is a highlight: a grid laid out like the overworld of the original NES Legend of Zelda, where every square is a challenge battle that unlocks new rewards. A second player can join in local co-op, one on the GamePad and one on the TV.
Hyrule Warriors later reached the 3DS and Switch in expanded editions and paved the way for Age of Calamity, but the Wii U original is where this particular celebration of Hyrule started. It is the Zelda game to reach for when you want to clear Hyrule Field single-handed and feel completely unstoppable doing it.
