The first time a Tremortusk crashes out of the treeline, an armored mountain of tusks and machinery that shakes the ground with every step, Horizon Forbidden West makes its intentions clear. Guerrilla Games' 2022 sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn sends Aloy beyond the borders of the known world into the Forbidden West, a vast frontier of red-rock canyons, snowy peaks, lush jungle and the ruins of old-world San Francisco and Las Vegas. She is racing to stop a creeping red blight and a run of devastating storms, and the hunt for answers leads her to threats far older and more dangerous than any machine.

Combat builds on everything that worked in Zero Dawn. Machines are still elaborate puzzles of armor plates, weak points and detachable components, and Aloy's arsenal of bows, slings, spike throwers and traps lets her take them apart piece by piece. New Valor Surges unleash powerful special abilities, melee gains real combos, and the menagerie grows with the serpentine Slitherfang, the winged Sunwing, the raptor-like Clawstrider and the hulking Shellsnapper. Exploration opens up just as much: the Pullcaster grapple, the Shieldwing glider and a diving mask send Aloy up cliffs, across valleys and deep underwater into drowned ruins.

Aloy is no longer a lone wanderer, either. Varl, Zo, Kotallo, Alva and Erend gather around her as a found family, the Tenakth, Utaru and Quen each bring their own culture and politics, and Lance Reddick's Sylens returns as the series' most quietly unsettling ally. Ashly Burch's Aloy is sharper and more burdened this time, carrying the weight of a world that still treats her as a savior. Side activities are generous, from the Machine Strike tabletop game to melee pits, arena challenges and hunting grounds.

On PlayStation 4, Forbidden West is the last-generation release of a game that also launched on PS5, and it handles the older hardware impressively, keeping the scale and spectacle intact. The later Burning Shores expansion was made for PS5 only, so this is the complete Forbidden West adventure as it exists on PS4, and the chapter where Horizon grew from a striking new series into a PlayStation flagship with an open world built to be stared at.
