Item Description
“I am the light that breaks the darkness.” Herald of Eternal Dawn backs up its flavor text with one of the most powerful defensive clauses in Magic: while it is on the battlefield, you can't lose the game and your opponents can't win the game. Add a 6/6 flying body and flash, and it becomes an Angel that shows up exactly when you need it.
Flash is what makes the seven-mana cost work. Hold it until an opponent's end step, or drop it in before a lethal attack connects, and suddenly the damage that should have finished you does nothing. Your life total can fall to zero or below and you stay in the game for as long as the Herald survives, which buys time to stabilize, gain the life back or close things out in the air. Lifegain, Angel and white control decks in Commander will love it, though it does make itself the table's top removal target, so protecting it is part of the fun.
Foundations was released in 2024 as a long-term entry point for Magic, and this mythic is one of its splashiest white cards. This is the Foundations printing, collector number 17, illustrated by Martina Fačková, in non-foil.
