Item Description

It has been raining for days, and every time the rain falls, the Origami Killer claims another boy, drowning him in rainwater and leaving an orchid on his chest and a folded paper figure in his hand. Heavy Rain, Quantic Dream's 2010 PlayStation 3 thriller, sets you against that clock through four people whose paths slowly cross: Ethan Mars, an architect whose son Shaun has been taken; Madison Paige, an insomniac journalist; Norman Jayden, an FBI profiler working the case with augmented-reality glasses called ARI; and Scott Shelby, a private detective quietly interviewing the families of past victims.

Ethan's story is the emotional core. To find Shaun he must complete a series of trials set by the killer, each named for an origami animal and each testing how far a father will go, from driving the wrong way down a busy highway in the Bear trial to crawling through a tunnel of broken glass in the Butterfly and the infamous choice in the Lizard trial involving his own finger. Scenes play out through contextual prompts, analog-stick gestures and Sixaxis motion, and when a character strains, you strain with them, holding down several buttons in awkward combinations as their grip starts to slip.

The design commits fully to consequence. There is no game-over screen; if a character dies, the story carries on without them, later scenes rewrite themselves around your choices, and the investigation builds toward one of many possible endings. The facial animation was a showcase for the PS3 at the time, and Normand Corbeil's mournful orchestral score keeps the dread close through every rain-slicked street and cramped apartment.

Heavy Rain built on the ideas of Quantic Dream's earlier Indigo Prophecy and became the studio's breakthrough, paving the way for Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human. Few games have started as many arguments among friends: who the killer is, what you should have done in the Lizard trial, whether everyone could have been saved. Playing the original PS3 release, with its motion-control moments intact, is the way to find out what your own instincts decide.
