Item Description

The real star of EA Bright Light's Half-Blood Prince is Hogwarts itself. The castle is built as a place to wander rather than a menu of levels, with corridors and courtyards that shift through different times of day, objects you can levitate or blast with spells, and the Marauder's Map guiding you as your progress opens more of the school. Get lost and you can summon Nearly Headless Nick to lead the way, a small touch that captures the series' charm.

Harry's sixth year is a darker one, and the game follows the story's shift from schoolboy rivalries to the gathering war, released alongside the 2009 film. Between story beats, school life fills the days: you attend classes, take part in Wizard Duels that move faster and lean harder on spellcasting than the earlier games, and suit up for Quidditch, now that Harry chases the Snitch for Gryffindor. Ron and Ginny take center stage in two levels of their own, and a set of multiplayer games rounds things out.

Potions class is the surprise. Rather than a cutscene, it is a hands-on mini-game in which you follow a recipe step by step, adding and mixing ingredients yourself, and it is the most memorable part of the school day. Reviews at the time were mixed, with the main story feeling slight next to the exploration, but the atmosphere of the castle earned it a loyal following.

For Potter fans, this is the console game that comes closest to simply letting you live at Hogwarts for a while, wand in hand, between the big moments of the book. The Xbox 360 version presents EA's version of the castle in high definition, and it makes a natural companion to Order of the Phoenix for anyone revisiting the late-2000s Potter games.
