Item Description

Four volumes, one investigation, and Quarantine is where the .hack saga finally pays off. Kite began as a newcomer whose friend fell into a coma after one bad night in The World; by now he carries the Twilight Bracelet, the trust of a growing circle of allies and the weight of a crisis that has spilled out of the game and into the real-world network. CyberConnect2 and Bandai designed the original .hack series as one long story told in four parts, and this is its final chapter.

The gameplay foundation is unchanged, and deliberately so: real-time combat with party commands, area keywords entered at Chaos Gates, and Data Drain as the tool that turns corrupted monsters into something Kite can beat. What changes is the scale. The last of the Phases rise, Tarvos and Corbenik among them, and Cubia, the shadow that has dogged Kite since the bracelet came into his hands, closes in. With your save carried over from Outbreak, Kite and his party arrive at their strongest, which is exactly what these battles demand.

Quarantine is also where the lore lands. The questions raised over the first three volumes, about Aura, about The World's origins in the Epitaph of Twilight and about why players are falling into comas, all come to a head, and the cast you have built up since Infection, BlackRose above all, gets the moments the story has been building toward. Between missions the simulated desktop of email, news and message boards keeps reflecting the mounting chaos, which makes the finale feel like it is happening to a whole community rather than one party.

Finishing it closes the loop on one of the PS2's most unusual experiments in serialized storytelling, and its events echo forward into the later .hack//G.U. trilogy, set in a rebuilt version of The World where traces of Kite's story still linger. For players working through the original four volumes in order, this is the destination, and the ending is the reward for every hour spent chasing Aura.

About the game

.Hack//Quarantine is the fourth of a series of four games, titled .hack//Infection, .hack//Mutation, .hack//Outbreak, and .hack//Quarantine, features a "game within a game"; a fictional massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) called The World which does not require the player to connect to the Internet. Players may transfer their characters and data between games in the series. Each game comes with an extra DVD containing an episode of .hack//Liminality, the accompanying original video animation series which details fictional events that occur concurrently with the games. The games are part of a multimedia franchise called Project .hack which explores the mysterious origins of The World. Set after the events of the anime series .hack//Sign, the games focus on a player named Kite and his quest to discover why some users have become comatose as a result of playing The World. The search evolves into a deeper investigation of The World and its effects on the stability of the Internet.
