What if Mega Man put down the buster and learned to throw a punch? That is the elevator pitch for Gravity Circuit, a 2023 action-platformer from Domesticated Ant Games that wears its Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero influences proudly while finding a rhythm all its own. You play Kai, the Gravity Circuit: one of nine robot heroes who once fought off the Virus Army, and the only one still on the right side. His memories are damaged, the other eight Circuits now lead a revived Virus Army, and the Guardian Corps needs him back in the fight.
Kai has no blaster, so every fight is up close: rapid flurries of punches, dashes, slides and wall jumps, all tied together by a grappling hook that can be fired in any direction. The hook is as much a weapon as a traversal tool, swinging Kai across gaps, latching onto walls and ceilings, and snatching up stunned enemies or stray projectiles to hurl back. Defeating enemies builds Burst Energy for flashy special moves, from laser beams and shock waves to a pile-driver and a rising uppercut that feel straight out of a fighting game.
Stages can be tackled in any order, each with its own theme and gimmicks, and each ends in a duel with one of the rogue Circuits. These are fast, hard-hitting two-phase fights, with a desperation super attack once a boss drops to around half health, and defeated bosses' Burst Attacks can be bought and added to Kai's arsenal. Rescued civilian robots unlock lasting upgrades, up to three equipped modifications tweak traits like fall speed and slide distance, and pits and spikes are not instant death, which keeps the momentum high and makes the game a natural fit for speedrunners. The Game Boy Advance-inspired pixel art is crisp, and the soundtrack blends chiptune with bass and acoustic textures.
Reviewers singled out its controls, level design and boss fights, and a sequel has since been announced. Gravity Circuit is that rare Mega Man-inspired indie that does more than imitate its heroes: it gives the formula a faster, punchier fighting style that is entirely its own.
Gravity Circuit is a flashy action packed 2D platformer in the spirit of console classics. Follow Kai, a lone operative war hero who harnesses the mysterious powers of the Gravity Circuit, on an adventure in a futuristic world inhabited by sentient robots.
