Item Description

Anyone who played the original Vice City already knows how Victor Vance's story ends: he is the man gunned down in the botched deal that opens Tommy Vercetti's game. Vice City Stories rewinds the clock to 1984 and finally gives Vic the spotlight. He is a corporal stationed at Fort Baxter Air Base, trying to support his family, when his corrupt superior, Sergeant Jerry Martinez, starts pulling him into the drug trade. One frame job and a dishonorable discharge later, Vic is out on the streets with his brother Lance, and the slow, very Grand Theft Auto slide from reluctant soldier to crime boss begins. Knowing where it all leads gives every mission a bittersweet edge.

The big new idea is empire building. Vic can seize rival operations across the city, from protection rackets to smuggling compounds, decide how large each business should be, and then defend his turf as other gangs push back. It turns the map into something you are actively conquering rather than just driving through, and it gives the story a satisfying sense of growth. The cast is pure mid-eighties excess: the Mendez brothers, Armando and Diego, run the city's drug trade, Lance is a constant liability, and Phil Collins turns up as himself, with Vic hired to keep him alive through his Vice City concert. Unlike Tommy, Vic can swim, which opens up the waterfront and side jobs like Beach Patrol.

Rockstar Leeds and Rockstar North built the game for the PSP first, and the PlayStation 2 version followed in March 2007. Rockstar called it a close port, but it makes good use of the bigger console with longer draw distances and added lighting effects, plus extra odd jobs, unique jumps and rampages to hunt down. The PSP's wireless multiplayer did not make the trip, so this is a single-player Vice City through and through, built on neon, pastel suits and a radio dial full of the decade's pop and rock.

It is also the last Grand Theft Auto released on the PlayStation 2, the closing chapter of the era that began with Grand Theft Auto III. Playing it on the console that made Vice City famous, with that opening scene from the 1986 story in the back of your mind, gives Vic's rise and his brother's ambitions a weight the original only hinted at.
