Item Description

Liberty City, Vice City and the state of San Andreas: three maps that defined what an open-world crime game could be, and this collection brings all of them together. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition gathers Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas, the run of PlayStation 2-era games Rockstar North released between 2001 and 2004, and rebuilds them in Unreal Engine for modern consoles.

Grand Theft Auto III is where the series first stepped into full 3D, following a silent getaway driver named Claude who is double-crossed after a bank job, left for dead, and then claws his way through Liberty City's mob families. Vice City trades that city's grey drizzle for 1986 neon, putting Tommy Vercetti in a Miami-inspired playground of speedboats, beachfront mansions and a licensed '80s soundtrack people still hum. San Andreas goes bigger than both, sending Carl "CJ" Johnson home to Grove Street in 1992 and out across an entire state, from Los Santos to San Fierro and the casinos of Las Venturas, with gang territory to win back, gyms to train in and a countryside full of side stories.

The Definitive Edition adds conveniences the originals never had. Weapons sit on a GTA V-style selection wheel, the controls and aiming were modernized, GPS-style route guidance comes to all three cities, and a failed mission can be restarted straight away instead of forcing another long drive back to the start. Lighting, textures, draw distance and character models were all reworked for the new engine.

It is only fair to say the remaster, handled by Grove Street Games, had a rocky launch in 2021, with players criticizing glitches and some of the reworked faces, and a string of patches followed. Underneath it all, though, are the same three campaigns that turned Grand Theft Auto into a household name: sharp mission design, pitch-black humor and a radio-soaked sense of a whole city ready for trouble. Having Claude, Tommy and CJ's stories together on one modern PlayStation, without tracking down a PS2 and three separate games, is the real appeal here.
