Item Description

Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 swaps American gangland for swinging London. The first mission pack in the series takes the top-down crime sandbox of the original GTA and drops it into the late sixties, complete with British slang, period motors, a cheeky groovy soundtrack and gangsters who would look at home in a British crime caper. DMA Design treated the setting as a playground for its sense of humor, and the result feels less like a quick add-on than a full-on period piece.

The jobs come from London's underworld, including the Crisp Twins, a pair of gangland brothers with more than a whiff of the Krays about them, and the loop is the classic early GTA formula: find a ringing phone, take the job, steal the right car and stay ahead of the coppers. New vehicles, characters and a brand-new city map extend the base game, and the British wit in the mission briefings makes every job worth reading.

London 1969 arrived in 1999 and holds a unique spot in the franchise. It is the only time the series has made a real European city its setting, and it shows how early Grand Theft Auto's love of parody and period pop culture took hold, years before Vice City built an entire game around 1980s Miami.

The Collector's Edition branding comes from Rockstar's 2002 reissue of the top-down PlayStation games. Tearing along the Thames in a stolen sixties motor with period tunes blaring is a delightfully British detour in the series' story, and a highlight of any GTA history shelf.
