Item Description

Toni Cipriani has been lying low out of the country after whacking a made man, and Liberty City has not waited for him. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories brings him home to the Leone family in 1998, three years before the events of Grand Theft Auto III, and drops him into a three-way war between the Leones, the Sindaccos and the Forellis just as the city is gearing up for a crooked mayoral race. Rockstar Leeds built it for the PSP in 2005, the first full 3D Grand Theft Auto made for a handheld.

Familiar faces fill the story. A younger Salvatore Leone treats Toni like a trusted soldier one day and a disposable one the next, Donald Love is still climbing toward his media empire, and Toni's mother never stops reminding him how badly he is doing as a gangster. The missions run through all three boroughs, from Portland's docks and red-light district to Staunton Island's high-rises and the suburbs of Shoreside Vale, and the satire lands as hard as it did on the consoles.

Seeing Liberty City again in 1998 is half the fun. Motorcycles roll through its streets for the first time, the radio dial is packed with original music, parody ads and talk shows, and side jobs like ambulance runs, vigilante patrols and vehicle challenges keep pulling you off the main path. Ad hoc wireless multiplayer added head-to-head modes for a group of PSP owners, a big deal for a portable GTA at the time.

Liberty City Stories proved that the series could live on a handheld without shrinking, and it fills in the backstory of the city GTA III players thought they knew. This Japanese release, with Japanese on-screen text and its own regional cover art, makes an appealing companion piece for collectors who track landmark games across their international editions.
