Respect is everything in Anywhere City. Grand Theft Auto 2 hands you the shoes of Claude Speed, a small-time crook in a grimy, near-future metropolis carved up between rival gangs, and asks one question over and over: whose side are you on today? Ring a gang's payphone and take their job, and you climb in their esteem while their enemies start shooting on sight. Burn the wrong bridge and you'll be dodging hit squads every time you cross into their turf. It's a clever, chaotic system that turned the open-ended mayhem of the first game into something with real consequences.

The city is split into three districts, Downtown, Residential and Industrial, each with its own trio of factions. The Zaibatsu Corporation runs through all of them, alongside crews like the Loonies, the Yakuza, the Rednecks, the SRS Scientists, the Hare Krishnas and the Russian Mafia, and every gang has its own look, cars and attitude. The police response escalates from beat cops to SWAT teams, federal agents and eventually the army, and the radio stations spinning in each stolen car give the whole thing its sneering, satirical voice.

DMA Design's 1999 sequel is the last of the classic top-down Grand Theft Auto games, released under the then-new Rockstar Games label two years before GTA III took the series into full 3D and changed the industry. Playing it now is a fascinating look at the series' DNA in its rawest form: the faction politics, the dark humor and the freedom to cause trouble anywhere are all here, just viewed from overhead with an arcade-like pace that still feels quick and nasty in the best way.

The Collector's Edition name comes from Rockstar's 2002 reissue that gathered the series' top-down PlayStation era back onto store shelves. GTA2 is the chapter that bridged the gap between the top-down originals and everything that came after, and the version of the formula where respect meters mattered more than mansions.
