It took the better part of a decade to arrive, and the polish shows in every swing. Granblue Fantasy: Relink was announced in 2016 as a console action RPG spun off from Cygames' hugely popular Japanese mobile RPG, with PlatinumGames assisting in the early years before Cygames took development fully in-house. When it finally landed in 2024, it turned the series' gorgeous sky-island world into a fast, flashy real-time brawler.

You play the Captain of the airship Grandcypher, alongside Lyria, a girl with the power to summon the colossal beasts known as primals, the small red dragon Vyrn, and longtime companions Katalina and Rackam. As in the mobile game, the Captain can be either Gran or Djeeta. The story carries the crew into the Zegagrande Skydom, a cluster of floating islands with hub towns like Folca, where Lyria's bond with primals, mighty Bahamut among them, sits at the center of a much bigger conflict.

Combat is the reason to stay. Nearly two dozen playable characters each bring their own weapon and skill set, different enough that switching who you control changes the whole rhythm of a fight. Basic attacks feed into skills that build toward a character's Skybound Art, and when all four party members unleash theirs in quick succession they combine into a chain burst. Sigils, slotted accessories that grant abilities and stat boosts, are where the build-crafting lives, while assist options can automate actions for players who would rather focus on the story.

The main story runs around twenty hours, but that is really the opening act. The post-game opens tougher quests and boss fights built for four-player co-op, the loop of hunting, upgrading and chasing better Sigils that the game was designed around. Tsutomu Narita's sweeping soundtrack and cel-shaded visuals that make the mobile game's illustrations move with remarkable fidelity round out an action RPG that won critics over and gave Granblue its biggest stage outside Japan.
