Item Description

Syd Mead drew the future for Blade Runner, Tron and Aliens, and in 1995 his designs also shaped the hover racers of Gran Chaser, the Japanese Sega Saturn release that North American players knew as Cyber Speedway. Developed by NexTech and published by Sega, it picks up the theme of the 1993 PC game CyberRace, another Mead-designed racer, and carries that sleek, industrial vision of tomorrow onto Sega's brand-new 32-bit console.

Races are a low-slung blur of hovercraft skimming over futuristic courses, and a story mode links the events together with cinematic interludes. The feature that earned the most attention at the time was two-player split-screen. Sega's own Daytona USA conversion was a solo affair on the Saturn, so Gran Chaser gave early owners a way to race a friend side by side on one television that the big arcade name could not.

Critics in 1995 were split. They welcomed the head-to-head mode, while some found the floaty handling too uniform from one surface to the next and the story mode's cinematics crude. Next Generation gave the Japanese release three stars out of five and called it good fun, if not great. That honest middle-of-the-pack reputation is part of its appeal today: it is a snapshot of the Saturn's first year, when studios were still working out what 3D racing on the hardware should feel like, and it wears its experimental streak openly.

As an import, Gran Chaser carries its original Japanese title and presentation, which makes it a natural partner for a Cyber Speedway on the shelf and a curious footnote in Syd Mead's career that many of his film fans never knew existed.
