Picture a fluffy orange cat on a hoverboard, carving through an army of glitter-eyed toys while the board beneath him never stops talking. That is Gori: Cuddly Carnage, a third-person hack-and-slash from Angry Demon Studio and publisher Wired Productions, and it commits to the joke with real enthusiasm.

The setup is pure Saturday-morning cartoon gone wrong. The Adorable Army, a candy-colored horde of cute creations, is out to conquer the galaxy, and Gori and his reluctant friends set out to stop it while searching for Professor Y, the missing creator who was the only human ever to show them love. Along for the ride, quite literally, is F.R.A.N.K., a talking hoverboard with an opinion on absolutely everything, and the trail leads to the secrets of Cool-Toyz Inc.

Play is all about momentum. Gori grinds rails, rides along walls and billboards, chains combos to stay airborne and shreds enemies with melee strings and explosive weaponry, while chase sequences send him racing ahead of a crashing wave or a flood of toxic sludge. Each of its eight levels ends with a boss fight against one of the army's generals, with weak points to blast from the rails, and par scores for time and combo give score chasers a reason to go back. Hidden keys in every stage unlock tougher remixed boss fights for players who want more.

Critics were split on the camera and the level design, but nobody accused it of being ordinary. The adult humor, pounding soundtrack and sheer collision of cuteness and gore give it a personality few action games would dare attempt, and it is just the kind of left-field PS5 pickup that starts a conversation on the shelf.
