Item Description

Picking up a skyscraper and hurling it at King Ghidorah is the kind of thing Godzilla fans had imagined for decades, and Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee finally let them do it. Developed by Pipeworks Software and published by Infogrames in 2002, it is a full-scale kaiju fighting game built around the thing every monster movie promises: a city-wide brawl where the buildings are as much a part of the fight as the monsters.

The setup comes straight from classic Toho science fiction. The alien Vortaak invade Earth and seize control of its giant monsters, sending them to ravage cities around the world, until one monster breaks free and fights back to drive the invaders off the planet. The GameCube roster pulls from across the film series: two versions of Godzilla (the 1990s Heisei design and the Millennium-era Godzilla 2000), Anguirus, Rodan, Gigan, Megalon, King Ghidorah, Mecha-King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, Destoroyah and Orga. Each moves and fights differently, with its own close-range attacks, special moves and signature beam weapons.

The arenas are where Melee earns its name. Cities crumble under every misstep, military forces open fire on whichever monster gets too close, and almost anything standing can be torn down or thrown. Adventure mode carries you through a sequence of increasingly tough opponents across the globe, while Survival, Destruction and Team Battle modes add variety. The real draw is the multiplayer Melee mode, where two to four players can go at it at once and monsters respawn until the highest score wins.

Reviews landed in a mixed-to-good range, with IGN among its biggest supporters, and it was nominated for Console Fighting Game of the Year. More importantly, it found a passionate audience among kaiju fans and launched Pipeworks’ run of Godzilla games, starting with Godzilla: Save the Earth in 2004. The GameCube version came first, months ahead of the Xbox release, and it is the original home of the four-player kaiju party that so many fans remember from sleepovers and late-night sessions.
