Item Description
Godfall was the very first game confirmed for the PlayStation 5, revealed at The Game Awards in December 2019, and when it arrived as a launch title in November 2020 it was built to show off what the new console could do. Counterplay Games and Gearbox Publishing called it a looter-slasher, and the label fits: this is a high-fantasy action game about hunting gear and smashing armies, dressed in some of the most dazzling gold and jewel-toned armor ever put on screen.
You play Orin, one of the last knights of a once-mighty order in the world of Aperion, out to stop his brother Macros from ascending to godhood. The journey carries you through elemental realms of Earth, Water and Air, each a lavish arena of gleaming temples, waterfalls and storm-swept spires. Your knight's identity comes from Valorplates, legendary suits of armor that each pair a striking look with their own abilities, and much of the fun is chasing the next plate and the loot that tunes it.
Combat is heavy and deliberate, with five weapon types to master: longsword, dual blades, polearm, two-handed war hammer and greatsword. Every weapon has its own rhythm, and the signature Soulshatter mechanic lets you stack damage on a foe before cashing it in with a single devastating strike, which turns big fights into satisfying puzzles of timing. Godfall can be played solo or in co-op with up to three knights, and it launched requiring an online connection even for solo play.
Critics were split on its repetitive mission structure but often praised the feel of its melee combat and its sheer visual spectacle. Played today, it is a fascinating time capsule of the PlayStation 5's first days, the game Sony's new machine was introduced with, and a flashy, combat-first loot chase for players who like their action games built around one more armor set.
