Item Description

God of War III does not ease you in. It opens with Kratos riding on the back of Gaia as the Titans scale Mount Olympus, and within minutes he is fighting Poseidon across the body of a climbing Titan while the camera pulls back to show the whole mountain at war. Santa Monica Studio's 2010 finale to the original trilogy, directed by Stig Asmussen, was the series' first game built for PlayStation 3, and that opening announced exactly how much bigger everything was about to get.

The boss fights are the reason people still talk about it. Kratos takes his revenge on Olympus one god at a time: Hades in the depths of the Underworld; Helios, whose severed head becomes a lantern for lighting dark passages; the elusive Hermes; a brutal brawl with Hercules, voiced by Kevin Sorbo; and Cronos, a Titan so enormous that the fight takes place on and around his body. The final confrontation with Zeus is as personal and savage as anything the series had attempted.

Stripped of his power after a fall into the Underworld, Kratos rebuilds his arsenal as he climbs. The Blades of Exile take over from the Blades of Chaos, joined by the Claws of Hades, the Nemean Cestus and the Nemesis Whip, while relics like the Bow of Apollo, the Boots of Hermes and the Icarus Wings open up new ways to fight and move. Combat is fast and weighty, the trademark quick-time finishers are staged on a colossal scale, and between battles the puzzles grow more elaborate, building toward the shifting Labyrinth of Daedalus and a surprisingly tender thread involving Pandora.

At launch this was the game PS3 owners reached for when they wanted to show off the console, and it closed the Greek saga with a finality that made the series' 2018 reinvention as a Norse story feel earned. On PlayStation 3 you get the trilogy's ending as it first arrived, plus the Challenge of Olympus trials and the punishing Chaos difficulty once the credits roll, a fitting last word on the god-killing Kratos of the PS2 and PS3 years.
