Item Description
The first thing Kratos does in God of War is cut down a tree marked with a golden handprint. It is wood for his wife Faye's funeral pyre, and her last wish sets the whole story in motion: carry her ashes to the highest peak in all the realms. Years after the slaughter of Olympus, the Ghost of Sparta is living quietly in the Norse wilds of Midgard with their son, Atreus, a boy he barely knows how to talk to. Then a tattooed stranger who cannot feel pain arrives at their door, and the journey begins with the gods already hunting them.
Santa Monica Studio, led by director Cory Barlog, rebuilt the series from the ground up. The camera sits just over Kratos' shoulder and never cuts away, following the entire adventure as one unbroken shot, and the combat is slower, heavier and far more deliberate than the Greek games. The Leviathan Axe is a joy: hurl it into an enemy, freeze it to a wall, then call it back to your hand with a satisfying thunk. Atreus fights alongside you with his bow, runic attacks and skill trees deepen your build, and the dwarf brothers Brok and Sindri forge the armor and upgrades that carry you forward.
The world opens up the longer you play. Rowing the Lake of Nine with the severed, endlessly talkative head of Mimir telling stories, crossing paths with the World Serpent Jörmungandr, or breaking into the elven realm of Alfheim and the fire trials of Muspelheim, there is always another chamber or legend to chase. The optional Valkyrie battles, culminating in a duel with their queen, Sigrún, are among the hardest and most memorable fights PlayStation has seen. Christopher Judge brings surprising tenderness to Kratos, and Bear McCreary's choral, Norse-flavored score is thunderous.
God of War swept Game of the Year honors at The Game Awards, the BAFTAs and the D.I.C.E. Awards, and set up the 2022 sequel, Ragnarök. On PlayStation 4 it is the start of the Norse saga, a father-and-son story wrapped in some of the best action of the generation, and every bit as gripping played on the console it was built for.
