Item Description

“The gods of Olympus have abandoned me.” God of War opens with Kratos stepping off a cliff into the Aegean Sea, then rewinds three weeks to explain how a Spartan general came to that edge. What follows is a revenge story on a mythological scale: years earlier, Ares tricked Kratos into killing his own wife and daughter, and now, with Athens under siege by the god of war himself, Athena offers Kratos a chance to settle the debt.

The game wastes no time showing its ambition. Its first major fight sends Kratos up against the Hydra across ships pitching in a storm, and later the search for Pandora's Box leads to a temple of traps and puzzles chained to the back of the Titan Cronos as he crawls across the Desert of Lost Souls. The structure alternates frantic combat with environmental puzzles and platforming, so every stretch feels like a new chapter of the myth.

At its heart are the Blades of Chaos, twin blades chained to Kratos's forearms, sweeping wide arcs through crowds of enemies in combos that are easy to start and satisfying to master. Magic gifted by the gods, from Poseidon's Rage and Medusa's Gaze to Zeus' Fury and the Army of Hades, adds crowd control, and Rage of the Gods turns Kratos into a temporary storm of violence. Its context-sensitive finishing moves against Minotaurs, Cyclopes and Gorgons turned button prompts into some of the most memorable spectacle of the era, and a whole generation of action games borrowed the idea.

Directed by David Jaffe at Sony's Santa Monica Studio and released in 2005, God of War launched a franchise that is still going strong, carrying Kratos from Greek myth into the Norse saga of the modern games. This is where the legend starts, and finishing it unlocks the Challenge of the Gods, a set of brutal combat trials that tests everything the main game taught you. On original PlayStation 2 hardware, it is the purest version of Kratos's origin story.

About the game

God of War is an action-adventure hack-and-slash video game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). Initially launched for the PlayStation 2, the game stands as the first instalment in the God of War series and the third in chronological order. Loosely inspired by Greek mythology, it unfolds in ancient Greece with vengeance as its central theme. The player takes on the role of Kratos, the protagonist, a Spartan warrior devoted to the Olympian gods. Tasked by the goddess Athena, Kratos is assigned to eliminate Ares, the God of War and Kratos' former mentor. Ares had deceitfully manipulated Kratos into killing his wife and daughter. As Ares attacks Athens fueled by hatred for Athena, Kratos embarks on a quest to locate Pandora's Box, the sole object capable of permanently stopping the vengeful god.
