Item Description
A grieving father, a son who barely knows him and a handful of ashes: that is how God of War opens, and it is a world away from the rage-fuelled spectacle that made Kratos famous. Santa Monica Studio's 2018 reinvention moves the Ghost of Sparta out of Greece and into the cold forests of Norse myth, long after the events of God of War III, where he has tried to bury his past and live quietly. When his wife Faye dies, Kratos and young Atreus set out to scatter her ashes from the highest peak in all the realms, and the gods of this new pantheon take a very personal interest in their journey.
Combat was rebuilt from the ground up. The camera sits close over Kratos's shoulder, and the Leviathan Axe is the star of the show: hurl it into an enemy or freeze a mechanism in place, then call it back to your hand with a thunk that never stops being satisfying. Atreus is far more than an escort, firing arrows on command, harrying enemies and growing into a real partner as the story unfolds, while runic attacks, armor crafting and skill upgrades let you shape Kratos to your own style. Most striking of all, the camera never cuts away. From the opening scene to the final one, the entire adventure plays out as a single unbroken shot.
Midgard opens up around the Lake of Nine, where the colossal World Serpent rests in the water and a small rowing boat carries you to hidden shores, treasure and side quests. The dwarven blacksmiths Brok and Sindri bicker their way through every upgrade, and Mimir, a talkative severed head who later rides on Kratos's belt, fills the boat trips with tales of Norse legend. The optional Valkyrie battles are a brutal final exam for everything the combat system teaches, and Bear McCreary's score, heavy with choir and Nordic instrumentation, gives the whole journey a mythic weight.
God of War won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2018 and launched the Norse saga that continued in God of War Ragnarök. What players remember most, though, is not any single boss fight but the relationship at its center: a hardened warrior learning to be a father, and a boy learning who his father really was. This is where that story begins, and on the PlayStation 4, the console it was built for, it is still a stunning way to meet an older, quieter and far more interesting Kratos.
