Somewhere between a spaghetti western, a Saturday-morning cartoon and a punishing kung fu film sits God Hand, the brawler Shinji Mikami directed at Clover Studio and the last game the studio released before it closed. Gene is a wandering martial artist who loses an arm defending a young woman named Olivia, only to have it replaced with the legendary God Hand, a weapon every demon, thug and cultist in the land wants for themselves. The story is an excuse; the fighting is the point.
And what fighting it is. Dodges live on the right analog stick, letting Gene sway, duck and backflip out of harm's way, and you build your own combo strings by assigning techniques from a large move library to your buttons. A roulette of special attacks lets you pause the action and unleash something spectacular, while releasing the God Hand itself turns Gene into a temporary whirlwind of invincible destruction. Enemies hit hard, read your habits and punish button mashing mercilessly, so learning to dodge and counter is not optional.
The level meter is God Hand's cleverest trick. Fight well and it climbs from Level 1 through Level 3 toward Level DIE, with enemies becoming more aggressive and the rewards growing richer as it rises; take a beating and it drops to give you some breathing room. The cast is gleefully absurd, from a luchador gorilla to the Mad Midget Five, a squad of tiny costumed heroes parodying Power Rangers, and Masafumi Takada's funk-and-surf soundtrack keeps the tone just right. Between brawls there is even a casino with slots, poker and chihuahua racing.
Reviews were famously divided when God Hand arrived in North America in 2006, and sales were modest, but the players who clicked with it never let go. Today it is a celebrated cult favorite, studied for one of the deepest combat systems of its era. The original PS2 disc is still the way to experience it: a brutally difficult, very funny action game from a team that never made anything ordinary.
