Bolivia has rarely looked so big as it does from a Ghost's drone, hovering over a cartel compound while four operators argue about who takes the sniper nest. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands, released in 2017 by Ubisoft Paris with Ubisoft Milan, drops an elite US special operations team into a fictional near-future Bolivia that the Santa Blanca drug cartel has turned into its private kingdom. Your job is to tear that empire down, and the game hands you a staggering amount of freedom in how you do it.
The cartel is built like a pyramid. Each of the map's 21 regions is run by a buchon tied to one of four divisions, Influence, Security, Production or Smuggling, and every boss you remove exposes the next rung: underbosses, division heads and finally El Sueño, the cartel's ruthless, devout founder. You choose the order, which means the campaign plays out differently depending on where you strike first, and the dossier of faces slowly filling with red X's is a great motivator.
The landscape is the real star: snowy mountains, dense forests, deserts and blinding salt flats across nine terrain types, all under shifting weather and a day-night cycle. You can recon a target with binoculars and the drone, mark enemies, call in Kataris 26 rebels for support and then decide whether to go in quiet or loud, by helicopter, truck or on foot. Solo players lead three AI teammates and can line up synchronized sniper shots, while the game was built for up to four friends in co-op, and a 4v4 competitive mode called Ghost War arrived as a free update later in 2017.
Reviews were mixed to positive, with praise for the world and the co-op and grumbles about repetitive missions, but players kept coming back, and it went on to sell more than ten million copies. It was the moment Ghost Recon went fully open world, and the sandbox that paved the way for Breakpoint. Its best moments still come from improvised plans going sideways in spectacular fashion.
