Item Description

Jon Bernthal makes a great villain. In Ghost Recon Breakpoint he plays Cole D. Walker, a former Ghost now leading the Wolves, a unit of rogue ex-special-forces soldiers. Walker seizes Auroa, a remote Pacific archipelago owned by Skell Technology, and takes control of its army of drones. Auroa was meant to be founder Jace Skell's showcase for a high-tech future, a haven for engineers and drone research, which makes it all the more unsettling when that technology starts hunting you. Your helicopter is shot down on the way in, and from there you are Nomad: stranded, hunted and badly outgunned.

That survival angle is what sets Breakpoint apart from the Ghost Recon games before it. Injuries slow you down until you patch yourself up, stamina limits how hard you can push across Auroa's steep terrain, and you can cover yourself in mud to hide from patrols. Bivouac camps let you rest, craft, switch classes and prepare for the next operation. Classes such as the Field Medic, Assault, Panther and Sharpshooter shape your approach, and the drones are a constant threat, from small scouts to the massive Behemoth.

Auroa itself is varied and striking, with volcanic peaks, glacial fields, swamps and futuristic research facilities, and the campaign was designed for solo play or four-player co-op. Breakpoint had a rocky launch, with criticism aimed at its loot-driven gear system, and Ubisoft spent the following year reshaping it with updates that leaned toward a more grounded, immersive experience.

Nomad, the squad leader from Wildlands, returns as your character, and this time the odds are reversed. It is the Ghost Recon where the Ghosts are the ones being hunted, a darker, more desperate follow-up to Wildlands that trades a cartel war in Bolivia for a fight to survive on an island built to kill you. Bernthal's Walker alone makes the trip to Auroa on PlayStation 4 worth taking.
