Item Description

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter imagines a soldier who sees the whole battlefield at once. Set in Mexico City in 2013, Ubisoft's 2006 Tom Clancy shooter casts you as Captain Scott Mitchell, leader of a small Ghost team sent in when a coup erupts during a summit between the American, Mexican and Canadian presidents. What follows is a tense, day-long fight through the streets of a city falling apart around you.

The signature piece is the Cross-Com, a battlefield information system that turns your helmet into a command center. A video feed from your squadmates or support units appears right on your HUD, and a remote drone can be flown above the rooftops to tag enemies before you ever step around a corner. From there you direct your Ghosts to positions, call for covering fire and coordinate with tanks and helicopters. Your gear includes the MR-C rifle and its variants, along with weapons you can scavenge in the field. Bullets hurt, so it rewards patience and cover over running and gunning, and a well-coordinated flank feels fantastic.

Few early Xbox 360 games felt as next-generation as this one. The bright, hazy lighting across Mexico City's plazas and highways, the sound of helicopters overhead and the chatter of the Cross-Com combined to sell the idea that you were inside a near-future military thriller. It earned strong reviews and plenty of awards at the time, and it set up a direct sequel a year later.

It is also a snapshot of where the Ghost Recon series turned from the deliberate PC tactical shooter of the early 2000s toward the high-tech, cinematic style that later entries kept building on. For players who prefer thinking through a firefight to sprinting through one, GRAW is the place where that shift started.
