Item Description
Sixteen years after a gang of outlaws murdered her family and left her for dead, Atsu walks back into Ezo with a list of names. The Snake, the Oni, the Kitsune, the Spider, the Dragon and Lord Saito, together the Yōtei Six, are about to discover that the locals' whispers about an onryō, a vengeful ghost, are not entirely wrong. That is the hook of Ghost of Yōtei, Sucker Punch Productions' 2025 follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, and it gives the game a sharper, more personal drive than its predecessor's war story.
Set some three centuries after Jin Sakai's fight for Tsushima, the adventure moves north to the lands around Mount Yōtei in what is now Hokkaido, a frontier beyond the reach of Japan's lords. Sprawling grasslands, snowy tundra and the great peak itself looming over the horizon give exploration a lonelier, wilder feel. A card-based clue system points Atsu toward her targets, golden birds lead to Altars of Reflection that teach new abilities, and a spyglass picks out points of interest across open country. When night falls she can make camp, cook a meal, play songs and receive allies who bring upgrades and supplies.
Combat is where the sequel shows the most growth. Atsu carries a whole arsenal and switches weapons to answer whatever an enemy is holding: a katana, dual katanas, the long and heavy odachi, a spear and the chained kusarigama up close, with a bow, a rifle, kunai and bombs for range. A mysterious wolf fights at her side, blinding powder buys a moment in a crowded brawl, and the grim, deliberate pace of each clash makes every one of the Six feel like a reckoning that has been sixteen years coming.
The presentation is just as considered. Toma Otowa's score blends Eastern instrumentation with Western flavor. Kurosawa Mode returns to turn the whole journey into a grainy black-and-white film, Miike Mode, made with director Takashi Miike, pulls the camera in close for muddier, bloodier fights, and Watanabe Mode lays hip-hop beats under the action, including new tracks from Samurai Champloo director Shinichirō Watanabe. Built for PS5 from the ground up, it is the chapter where the Ghost series stepped out of Jin's shadow and found a new legend worth telling.
