Item Description

Two samurai face each other across a field of swaying pampas grass, the wind picks up, and only one of them walks away. Ghost of Tsushima is built on moments like that. In 1274 the Mongol Empire lands on the island of Tsushima, and on the beach at Komoda the island's samurai are slaughtered by Khotun Khan's invading army. Jin Sakai survives, barely, and his uncle and guardian, Lord Shimura, is taken prisoner. To save him and his people, Jin has to fight in ways the samurai code forbids, and the tension between honor and survival drives everything that follows.

Combat is methodical and deeply satisfying. Standoffs let you challenge a group to single combat and cut down the first attacker in one perfectly timed stroke, and four stances, Stone, Water, Wind and Moon, are each suited to swordsmen, shield-bearers, spearmen or brutes. As Jin becomes the Ghost, he adds kunai, smoke bombs, sticky bombs and wind chimes to his arsenal and can terrify an entire camp with a single brutal kill. Sucker Punch also did away with the usual waypoint clutter: swipe the DualShock 4 touchpad and the guiding wind blows toward your destination, while golden birds and foxes lead you to hot springs, shrines, bamboo strikes and haiku spots.

Tsushima itself is the star, from wind-swept grasslands to crimson maple forests and snowy mountain passes, rendered with a painterly beauty that makes you stop mid-mission. Kurosawa Mode turns the whole game into a grainy black-and-white samurai film, a Japanese voice track lets you play it like one, and Ilan Eshkeri and Shigeru Umebayashi's score adds shakuhachi and taiko to the drama. The people of Jin's journey stay with you too: the thief Yuna, the cantankerous archery master Sensei Ishikawa and the grieving Lady Masako.

It arrived in 2020 as one of the last great PlayStation 4 exclusives, and its success led the real city of Tsushima to name the game's creative and art directors honorary tourism ambassadors. A Director's Cut with the Iki Island expansion followed, and a sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, in 2025, but this is where the Ghost was born, played on the hardware it was made for.
